Jim Duffy

Location: Lakeside, California, USA
Known For: Early promoter and distributor of superhot peppers through Refining Fire Chiles

Jim Duffy is a pioneering figure in the global chili pepper community, best known not for creating new pepper varieties, but for helping bring superhots into the mainstream through Refining Fire Chiles, a specialty seed and plant company based in Southern California. Through strategic partnerships with international breeders and institutions, Duffy has played a central role in introducing countless rare and exotic peppers — including the Bhut Jolokia, 7 Pot, Trinidad Scorpion, and Moruga strains — to North American growers.

Duffy founded Refining Fire Chiles in the late 2000s, at a time when access to authentic, high-heat chili seeds was limited. Working closely with growers in India, Trinidad, Peru, and Africa, he helped authenticate seed lines and document their origins, often traveling to verify seed provenance firsthand. He also worked with university researchers (including those at New Mexico State University and the University of California) to test Scoville ratings and promote the medicinal and agricultural uses of capsaicin.

Jim has often served as the bridge between breeders and the public, giving early visibility to now-iconic peppers like the Carolina Reaper, 7 Pot Douglah, Fatalii, and Bhut Jolokia Chocolate. His website and newsletters have educated thousands of growers, and his plants have been featured on programs ranging from The History Channel to Hot Ones.

Though not a breeder himself in the traditional sense, Duffy is widely credited with popularizing superhots in the U.S., mentoring growers, and preserving important heirloom and indigenous varieties from extinction.
