Meet Benjamin Toomey

The Grower Behind Our Apocalypse Scorpion Pepper

At SpiceQuest, we take pride in collaborating with growers whose passion and expertise bring rare and unique peppers to life. Meet Benjamin Toomey, a chef by trade turned dedicated superhot cultivator, whose collection of over 200 varieties speaks to an obsession that goes far beyond heat.

Benjamin's journey into the world of superhots began about eight years ago with a simple desire: to grow something you can't find at the grocery store. "I wanted the thrill factor," he explains, "and the fact that they pack so much punch into a tiny little pepper." What started as curiosity quickly became something deeper. Today, Benjamin admits he doesn't eat them much anymore—but he can't stop growing them.

"There's just something about them I can't put my finger on that is addicting," Benjamin shares. "I love everything about starting from a seed to harvesting the final product. It's very fulfilling and satisfying." For him, it's the unique traits, the colors, the shapes, the textures—each plant a small experiment, each harvest a reward. What began as a hobby has become part of his life.

His background as a chef informs his approach. Benjamin understands that heat alone isn't enough—a pepper needs to add a spark to a dish in a way that makes sense. That culinary instinct shows in the Apocalypse Scorpion he's cultivated: a pepper with the striking gnarly appearance and sweet, fruity, floral complexity of its superhot Italian origins, but with a heat level that invites everyday use rather than demanding endurance.

Originally developed in Italy by the AIASP (Associazione Italiana Amatori e Sostenitori del Peperoncino) around 2010, the standard Apocalypse Scorpion is a notoriously unstable superhot—known for dramatic variation in heat, color, and shape from plant to plant. Benjamin's selection, lab-tested at 220,918 SHU, captures the best of the original while landing comfortably between a Scotch Bonnet and Habanero. It's superhot heritage you can actually cook with.

Beyond peppers, Benjamin has recently gotten into garlic and tomatoes, and he's known for his infused salts, salsas, and hot sauces—with salts and salsa being particular favorites. It's all part of the same philosophy: growing things with intention, from seed to final product.

We're honored to feature Benjamin's Apocalypse Scorpion in our Limited Edition Pepper Series. His chef's eye for flavor, combined with years of hands-on cultivation experience, is exactly the kind of craftsmanship that SpiceQuest celebrates.
