Apocalypse Scorpion
“The False Prophet”
Between No. 2 (Scotch Bonnet) and No. 4 (Habanero) lives the Apocalypse Scorpion. It is the kind of pepper that feels like a crossover: accessible enough for everyday cooking/grinding, but with the unmistakable scorpion genetics that remind you where it came from.
Whether you're looking for a pepper that delivers approachable heat with genuine character, or a daily-use spice that still carries the mark of the superhot bloodline, this delivers a bright, building burn with a surprisingly complex flavor backbone.
Heat and Flavor
Lab-tested at 220,918 Scoville Heat Units, the Apocalypse Scorpion opens with a clean chinense fruit note before the heat begins to rise. The burn is steady and confident rather than explosive, settling into a warm, persistent glow that stays on the lips and back of the throat.
There is no bitterness here. No chemical sharpness. Just a natural, slightly floral sweetness followed by a slow-building heat that feels intentional.
This is the kind of pepper that rewards precision.
Origin Story
The Apocalypse Scorpion pepper traces its lineage to Italy, originally developed by the Italian pepper association AIASP (Associazione Italiana Amatori e Sostenitori del Peperoncino) around 2010, with the goal of creating a pepper that could rival the world's hottest. Seeds were not made available to the public until 2015.
This particular strain was cultivated and stabilized by grower Benjamin Toomey, who selected for a more accessible heat level while preserving the pepper's signature flavor profile and striking appearance.
Lineage: The pepper is a scorpion-type Capsicum chinense hybrid, though the exact parentage remains undisclosed by the original breeders.
Characteristics: Known for its gnarly, heavily wrinkled pods with rough, pock-marked skin and the signature scorpion tail. Pods grow 2–3 inches long and ripen from green to a vibrant red.
Flavor Profile: Sweet, fruity, and distinctively floral—traits that set this pepper apart from other chilies in its heat range.
