Filling & Refilling

Filling & Refilling Your SpiceQuest Grinders

Choose the method that matches the grinder and refill in front of you.

Before you get started

Gloves on. Clean, dry surface.

We recommend gloves whenever you fill a grinder, even when they weren’t included. Read the filling instructions provided and open only one sealed refill tube at a time.

For ultra-hot refills, read the warning card and put on the protective gear provided before opening the tube. Keep spice away from eyes and out of reach of children.

Using a SpiceQuest refill tube

Four steps to refill your grinder.

For a standard SpiceQuest grinder. If you have a Travel Grinder, use the funnel method below instead.

  1. Unscrew the bottom base, original SpiceQuest illustration

    Unscrew.

Unscrew and remove the bottom base of the empty grinder.

  2. Pair the open grinder and refill tube, original SpiceQuest illustration

    Pair.

Open the refill tube. Place the open bottom of the grinder over the top of the open tube.

  3. Invert the pair and twist the tube, original SpiceQuest illustration

    Flip & twist.

Invert the pair together so the tube is on top. Twist the tube to transfer the spice into the grinder.

  4. Secure the base, original SpiceQuest illustration

    Secure.

Screw the base back onto the grinder until snug. Clean the outside of the grinder and your work surface with a wipe or clean cloth.

Filling a Travel Grinder

A smaller opening. A different method.

Use the small steel funnel tucked inside the Travel Grinder’s travel case. This applies wherever a Travel Grinder is included, including the Matchbook kit.

For Matchbook kits, put on the face mask and gloves provided when you’re ready to fill the empty grinders. You do not need them just to open the kit.

  1. Unscrew the base and turn the grinder upside down.
  2. Place the funnel in the opening. Pour the contents very slowly and gently into the funnel.
  3. Gently shake the funnel so the spice falls into the grinder. Replace the base until snug, then wipe.
Using your own spices or herbs

The texture matters.

We strongly recommend SpiceQuest refills because they’re designed to work with our grinders. You can also use other spices or herbs when they’re correctly ground.

Dry, flaked or crushed.

Use fully dry material in a flaked or crushed form.

Not whole or powdered.

Whole pieces may not feed. Fine powder may seep out.

No damp or oily material.

Keep the grinder and its contents away from steam and moisture.

Unsure about a spice or herb? Ask SpiceQuest before filling. This guidance applies to all empty grinders, including Beast XL and the Travel Grinder.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Drying conditions vary. The time and temperature discussed reflect SpiceQuest’s equipment and method. Follow your dehydrator’s instructions, allow for differences in pepper size and thickness, and make sure the peppers are fully dry before grinding.
  • Aim for fine flakes, not powder. Although you’ll hear “powder” used in the video, the goal for your SpiceQuest grinder is a dry, flaked or crushed texture. Fine powder may seep out.
  • Handle peppers with care. Wear gloves, avoid breathing airborne spice, and keep peppers away from your eyes and out of reach of children. Use the protective gear provided with ultra-hot products.
