Grinder Care

Caring for Your SpiceQuest Grinders

A few simple habits help keep every grinder clean, dry, and ready for its next meal.

Everyday care

Three habits worth keeping.

Store cool and dry.

Keep your grinders and their contents in a cool, dry place, away from heat and moisture.

Keep away from steam.

Don’t hold grinders directly over warm food or a steaming pot. Steam and humidity can cause spice to clump.

Return grinders to their holder.

Use the acrylic holder provided before and after use to help keep spice off nearby surfaces.

If spice isn’t flowing

Loosen clumped or compacted spice.

Over time, spice can settle, clump, or compact inside the grinder and restrict the flow. Don’t force the grinder. Follow the steps below to gently loosen the spice.

Before opening the grinder: use gloves when handling loose spice. For ultra-hot products, read the warning card and put on the protective gear provided.
  1. Open the base.

Turn the grinder upside down, then unscrew and remove the bottom base.

  2. Loosen gently.

Use the Spice Spoon if one came with your product, or a toothpick. Gently loosen the spice without forcing the mechanism.

  3. Secure and return.

Replace the base securely, then return the grinder to its acrylic holder.

Wipe away any loose spice from the outside of the grinder and nearby surfaces with a wipe or clean cloth. Avoid touching your face or eyes, and wash your hands afterward.

Cleaning your grinders

Dishwasher-safe. Dry thoroughly.

We use 304 stainless steel, a durable, corrosion-resistant grade widely used in food-service equipment. All SpiceQuest grinders are dishwasher-safe.

Empty the grinder before washing. Always dry it thoroughly, inside and out, after washing and before adding any spice. Good care helps preserve the steel’s corrosion resistance, and moisture left inside can cause spice to clump.

Check the cap regularly

Tightening the thumb-cap

Micro-vibrations during movement and travel can loosen the cap on standard SpiceQuest grinders. Check it periodically and tighten as needed. Beast XL does not need this tightening step.

  1. Step 1: Hold the grinder body.

    Hold the grinder body.

Keep the grinder steady with one hand.

  2. Step 2: Pull the spring down.

    Pull the spring down.

Gently pull the spring down, away from the thumb-cap.

  3. Step 3: Twist the cap until snug.

    Twist the cap until snug.

Keep the spring pulled down. With your other hand, turn the thumb-cap clockwise until snug.

Follow the steps with Fabio’s narration, readable pauses, and a slower view of the clockwise turn. On-screen instructions also work with the sound off.

Taking a grinder along

Fit the rubber stopper before travel.

For grinders supplied with a rubber stopper, fit it over the base after grinding and before placing the grinder in its travel case or pocket. It helps prevent flakes from spilling onto your hands or inside the case.

The standard travel-case and cap-tightening instructions do not apply to Beast XL grinders.
