Often referred to in grower circles as the California Reaper, it is widely believed to be a cross between the Carolina Reaper and Jay’s Peach Ghost Scorpion. That lineage matters. It explains both the intensity and the unexpected elegance.

This particular batch was grown by Aaron Wolfe of The Wolfstead, whose approach favors stability, flavor, and restraint over shock value. Visually, the pepper leans toward soft peach and apricot tones, a quiet contrast to what follows. The first taste is bright and lightly sweet, with stone fruit and floral notes that feel almost delicate. Then the heat arrives. It builds steadily, spreads evenly, and lingers with confidence rather than chaos. The finish is clean for a pepper at this level, with less bitterness than you might expect and a warmth that stays with you.
